End of Life for Windows 7

Jul 04, 2019

After 10 years, support for Microsoft Windows 7 (typically installed on lap-tops or desktop devices) is coming to an end on 14 January 2020. There’s an opportunity now to be proactive about what’s next. Changes and upgrades in technology are inevitable, and there’s never been a better time to start putting in motion the things you need to do to shift your business into a modern workplace.

When does Windows 7 support end?

Windows 7 End of Life is 14th January 2020. Up until that date Windows 7 is currently in an ‘extended support’ phase.

What does this mean?

When Windows 7 reaches its End of Life (EOL) on 14th January 2020, Microsoft will stop technical support for any issues or releasing updates and patches for the operating system. However, that doesn’t mean Windows 7 will stop working on that day – you’ll still be able to use Windows 7 for as long as you want. But just because you can continue to use Windows 7, doesn’t mean you should.

The biggest issue with continuing to use Windows 7 is that it won't be patched for any new viruses or security problems once it enters End of Life on 14th January, and this leaves you extremely vulnerable to any emerging threats.

What should I do if my business is on Windows 7?

In the first instance, we would suggest that you contact a certified Microsoft partner, such as Yorb (Gold Certified), to discuss your business requirements and what this means for your current Windows 7 devices.

If you are an existing Yorb client with either an AV & Reporting, OneCare or TotalCare Managed service we already have full visibility of your installed base of software and will be proactively contacting you to discuss what your options are based upon your business requirements.

How do I know if I have Windows 7?

Again, if you are an existing Yorb client with either an AV & Reporting, OneCare or TotalCare Managed service we know your installed base of software and will be proactively contacting you well in advance of January 2020 to discuss your options.

If you are not on one of these managed services with Yorb you can easily check what version of Windows you have by clicking the windows button ( windows icon ) concurrently with the letter R. When a command box appears type in ‘winver’ and press enter. Examples below:

A box will appear (as above) stating what version of Windows you have

If in doubt, or if you need help with this, please feel free to call the Yorb Support Desk on 0800 600 606.
