Chrome web browser update

Apr 24, 2018

Ensuring your websites are safe from unauthorised access is vital to us. Google has recently announced that from July its Chrome web browser will flag every site that doesn’t use HTTPS encryption.

What is a secure HTTPS site?

HTTPS means encryption protects the channel between your browser and the website, ensures no one in the middle can tamper with the traffic or spy on what you’re doing. Without that encryption, someone with access to your router or ISP could intercept information sent to websites or inject malware into otherwise legitimate pages.

Previously Google started marking sites that had data entry fields (Forms, Passwords, Credit Cards) as insecure if they didn’t have a Secure certificate. With this upcoming update, EVERY site that isn’t HTTPS will be flagged as ‘not secure,’ whether it includes input fields or not.

What does this mean for unsecure sites?

Google Chrome is the most popular browser across smart phone and desktop users taking over 55% of the market compared to Safari. If your site asks your customers to enter sensitive information such as names, address or credit card details, they're at risk of :

  • Someone “listening” to their conversations, track their activities across multiple pages, or steal their information.

  • Their data being modified or corrupted during transfer, intentionally or otherwise, without being detected.

Data sent using HTTPS is significantly more secure and provides three layers of protection:

  • Encryption- encrypting the exchanged data to keep it secure from That means that while the user is browsing a website, nobody can “listen” to their conversations, track their activities across multiple pages, or steal their information.

  • Data integrity- data cannot be modified or corrupted during transfer, intentionally or otherwise, without being detected.

  • Authentication- is the process of determining whether someone or something is, in fact, who or what it is declared to be. This protects them against man-in-the-middle attacks and builds user trust.
